It is a well-known and beautiful town
on the southern part of Lake Maggiore. It has prehistoric
origins and held an important role in the Roman Time as terminus
of the main route which linked Milano through Gallarate, Somma
Lombardo and Sesto Calende to Lake Maggiore and therefore
to the Alpine passes and Northern Europe.
It is dominated by the Borromeo's Castle, the Rocca,
that stands overlooking the lake and the town from its hilltop
position. Underneath the Rocca there is the cave of Mithras,
a natural cavern inhabited in prehistoric times and used for
the cult of the god Mithras during Roman Times.
There is a beautiful tree-lined promenade, with the sight
of a curious little island, the Partegora
Islet, rich in vegetation and inhabited by lake fauna,
now protected wetland.
Along the promenade there is Madonna
della Riva's Sanctuary, whose construction started in 1657 and never
ended.
The Civic Museum with the finds of the
Roman necropolis discovered in Angera in 1971 is also worth a visit.
