Placed on the northern part of Lake Varese,
it was inhabited since the High Neolithic Period as the
find of some pile-dwelling settlements evidences.
The Bardello River that flows to Lake
Maggiore was very important for all the population that
inhabited the surroundings as the only route of communication
with Lake Maggiore.
At the mouth of the Bardello River there was
a landmark tower and along its banks were built mills, spinning-mills,
oil-mills and saw-mills..
The fish was conserved in an ice-house
in which the ice collected from the frozen lake in winter
had been stuffed.

The ice-house
