Besozzo

 |
It's a thickly populated town of remarkable importance and rich
of history. Today Besozzo has two nuclei: Besozzo Superiore, the most ancient, and Besozzo Inferiore, more recent and center
of the city life.
Placed on the hill belt that stretches between Lake Maggiore and
Lake Varese, it was probably inhabited by the same pile dweller
populations who lived on the near Lake Varese. Many archeological findings
evidence that in the area there was an important settlement, along
the road that linked Sesto Calende to the Tresa bridge and the Lucomagno
Pass. Later, the Romans assigned the territory to settlers and veterans
to plant.
The Besozzi were the most important family and played an
important part in the growth of the town. In 1582 they founded a
school to teach aristocracy sons and 12 poor boys "grammaticam,
humaniores litteras et rethoricam".
