Placed in a fine position along the crest between Lake Varese
and Lake Biandronno, it has very ancient origins as the findings
of pile dwelling settlements on the opposite Virginia
Islet evidence.
Benesprando Quaglia found in 1854 along the road linking Biandronno
to Travedona a bronze astragal datable at II century A.C.
and used by the Romans as weight unit. Caracalla and Alessandro
Severo coins have been discovered by some farmers in their fields
as well as crockery or headstone.
At the time of the Seprio's Count, Biandronno Castle,
that was one of its valuable bulwarks, was burnt and destroyed by
Godwin von Heinsberg, named Gozzolino. The Castle was never rebuilt.
In 1864 Lake Biandronno and the surrounding marsh have been
drained to get peat out of them and to increase the surface of cultivable land. All the area is today a protected wetland.
At Cassinetta, Giovanni Borghi established the Ignis factory,
now Whirlpool.
