Cadegliano Viconago
Placed on the slopes of the Mount Mezzano, the Municipality is
formed by the hamlets of Cadegliano, Viconago, Arbizzo, Argentera,
Avigno, Doneda and Gaggio. Settled into a green open hollow turned
to the Lake Lugano it enjoys a fine view on the Swiss pre-Alps.
Many villas with luxuriant gardens have been built at the end of
the 18th century as resort houses, such as Villa Pellini, Villa
Menotti Alfonso, Villa Pellini Pellegatta, Casa Righini, Villa Menotti
and Villa Scolari.
Viconago is the oldest hamlet and preserves the Church of
San Antonio Abate, with a lintel portal on which there are
three carved Longobard crosses and some precious frescoes by Bartolomeo
from Ponte Tresa dated 1531. In the town centre there is the medieval
building 'Casa Andina" dates back to XI-XII century.
In the Church of San Giovanni Battista, there is a valuable
marble altar made by the sculptor Giuseppe Rosnati and saved from
the demolition of a Milanese church.
At Avigno there is one of the finest Romanesque bell tower
of the varesotto. Close to the bell tower there is the Church
of San Fedele and Beata Vergine del Carmine.
At Doneda, linked to Viconago by a stairway, there is a medieval
court named in a 1196 document. The Church of San Fedele
and San Silvestro, at Ardizzo, was built in 1699 and preserves
a XVI century painting of the Beata Vergine della Misericordia.
At Argentera there was an old lead and silver mine at work since
XIII century.
