Placed at the foot of the hill from which the Parish Church
of San Pietro and San Paolo overlooks the town, it is on the
border between the Varese and Como Province and between Italy
and Switzerland.
Its fine historical centre has some buildings of the XVII-XVIII
century with stone portals and porticos. To the Cantello Municipality
the hamlets of Ligurno and Gaggiolo belong.
At Ligurno have been discovered some Celtic necropoles of
the Golasecca Civilisation, datable to 900 - 800 B.C. Among
the other finds there are a Roman necropolis, a stretch of
road, Tito's coins and many other objects preserved at the
Civic Museum of Varese.
Close to the Parish Church has been discovered an Ara devoted
to Jovethat is now on the coat-arms of the Municipality.
Cantello is famous for the asparagus growing.
