Situated to the southeastern border of the Varese Province, until
to the 1940 was called Caronno Milanese in order to distinguish
it from Caronno Varesino. Later on that one of the Pertusella hamlet
joined to the name of the old village.
Probably founded by the Romans, its ancient name of Callaonnum
has been derived by the Roman military servants carried weapons
and foods to the troops. As in the neighbourhood of Milano it was
theatre of incursions by several band of mercenaries in the Middle
Ages..
As the first textile industries appeared along the Olona River,
also in Carono arose the first spinning-mills.
The factory owned by Senatore Gadda had as manager Francesco Ratti,
the father of the Pope Pio XI, Achille Ratti. A memorial
stone on the wall of the old spinning-mill recalls that Achille
Ratti lived here his youth.
Today, Caronno Pertusella is an industrious town at the doors of
Milano.
