At the end of the Olona Valley, where the Varese and Milano Province adjoin, we find Castellanza, an active small town.
Castellanza is a good example of requalification of the urban territory: the re-use of old buildings and free areas is not only an active recovery of historical testimony of the city but above all a conversion of the city ground. Some inactive industrial buildings on the Olona River have been acquired by the Municipality and re-used to social scopes. So, the structure of the spinning "Cantoni" has been recently restructured becoming the seat of the Università Carlo Cattaneo (L.I.U.C.).
The archeological finds recovered in all the zone testify that in Roman Times there was a little country village. Probably, a fortification in defence of the routes that joined Milano to the Lake Maggiore, Como to Novara and towards the northern Europe.
To see:
- Palazzo Carminati Brambilla, the Town Hall
- Villa Pomini, a public cultural centre with the interesting library left by Luciano Ottorino Pomini
- Villa Jucker, belonged to the Fagnani Arese family and from 1870 to the Cantoni one
- the Pagani Foundation Modern Art Museum that houses contemporary sculptures, paintings and mosaics.
