Placed in one of the more charming inlet of the
Lake Maggiore, it has on the back large wooded expanses.
In 1928, Castello Valtravaglia, on the lake,
and Veccana, on the inland hills, joined into the municipality
of Castelveccana, that also includes the villages of Bissago, Vallate,
Caldè, Castello, Nasca, Orile, Pessina, Rasate, Ronchiano,
Saltirana, San Pietro, and Sarigo.
Caldè is a beautiful village with
a little port and the famous pinnacle of limestone overhanging the
waters. Today we can see only few remains of the ancient Rocca
di Caldé, but from the top of the hill you can enjoy
a beautiful view. On the shore, around the promontory, we can see
the chimneys of the old furnaces where the limestone was changed
in fine lime.
To see:
- Sarigo with its stone house and old lanes, the XII century
Church of San Giorgio and the decorated house of the painter Genesio
Boldrini
- Saltirana with the Church of San Martino and the wash-house
at the entrance of the village
- Rasate and its chestnut woods
- Nasca with the bell tower of the destroyed Church of San
Martino
- the Froda Falls, a 100 mt drop from the Mount Cuvignone
- the San Antonio pass, with the little romanesque church
and the splendid view on the lake
