Cocquio Trevisago

It stands on the slopes of the Campo dei Fiori, along the road that leads from Varese to Laveno. It is formed by the union of the hamlets of Trevisago, certainly of Roman origin, cross-roads of three important ways of communication for the Lake Maggiore, for Milan and Switzerland, and Cocquio placed on the hill, ancient residence of the Lord, vassal of the Duke of Milan. The Roman infuence is also in the names of some fractions: Carnisio had to be the place of the warehouses of salt meat; Caldana the cook-house (caudana) and Cerro (quercus cerris) the place where collected the firewood.

In the hamlet of S. Andrea, in 1400, a convent of Humiliates roses, near a chapel dedicated to the saint. In short, the working and the commerce of the wool made possible the construction of a second convent, dedicated to S.Bartolomeo. To the abolition of the order, in 1571, the assets came confiscated from the Ducato of Milan and yielded to the noble from Milan.

In Trevisago, today, there are many industrial and trade business activities whereas Cocquio preserves its ancient structure, with narrow streets, old houses and silence.

Along the road to Gemonio, on the left, in place Mulini, there is the Salvini Museum, home of the artist Innocente Salvini.

Curiosity: in place Medù and Torre we can see the springs of the Moerbia stream that flows into the Bardello River, after only one kilometer. It is the shortest stream of Lombardy.
