It stands among the two glacial lakes of Monate and Comabbio, in a hollow between the hill with the parish church of S. Giacomo and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Rosario and the Mount Pelada (m 471).
The archeological finds go back to the Neolithic age with several pile-dwelling discovered in both lakes. Along the road to Mercallo, as proof of the importance of this area, has been recovered a Roman necropolis. On the river of the Comabbio Lake there's a ice house, where the ice was collected in winter to conserve the fish.
To see:
- the ancient parish church dedicated to S. Giacomo Maggiore, that San Carlo Borromeo visited in 1574, with a golden wood-engraving tabernacle and altar-frontals made in scagliola by
G.B. Rapa in 1739.
- the Sanctuary of the Beata
Vergine del Rosario
- the church of San Rocco,
dated XV century, razed to the ground and rebuilt in 1960 to make way for the road Vergiate-Besozzo. Its original frescoes have been removed and put back in the new building.
