Placed on the morenaic hills that come before the Prealps, it has been formed in 1027 by the union of two town: Gazzada and Schianno. Like all the surroundings of the Lake Varese, it was probably inhabited from the Bronze Age as the erratic boulder with cupel recovered in the place let to suppose.
To see:
- the church of Santa Croce, with XV century frescoes
- the Oratory of S. Maria Assunta, consecrated by S. Carlo Borromeo in 1574
- Villa Cagnola and its beautiful garden that slopes down to the lake
- at Schianno, the church of SS. Cosma and Damiano, built previously the Thousand and with the entry by the bell tower
- the church of S. Giorgio, in which stayed S. Carlo
during his visit in 1574
- the church of S. Martino, the first church in Schianno,
existed since 1069
