Formed by the union of Lavena and Ponte Tresa, this beautiful town stands where the Lake Lugano changes in a peaceful basin, just before the Tresa River flows in the Lake Maggiore.
Since the Roman age Ponte Tresa had a strategic role as turning-point towards the Alpine passes of Gottardo, Lucomagno and San Bernardino and the North of the Europe.
In Lavena rose the first lake-dwelling and since the Bronze Age it was an important shunting-station for all who lived around the lake.
As in 1512 the Canton Ticino became part of the Helvetic Confederation, the Tresa River becam the boundaries between the two States and the village of Ponte Tresa was divided in two part.
