This town stands on the slope of the Monte Sette Termini and preserves fine rural houses with stone portals and narrow streets.
One of the greater Lombard Renaissance painters, Giovanni
Carnovali known as il Piccio (1804-1873), born in Montegrino.
To see:
- St. Ambrogio's parish church with its romanesque bell tower
- St. Martino's Oratory, out of the village and on a rocky promontory, preserves a XVIth century fresco by Guglielmo from Montegrino. From its churchyard, we can see a splendid view of the valley and the Lake Maggiore
- in the park Pineta Alta there is a prehistoric rock altar with cupels datable at the Bronze Age
- at Bosco Valtravaglia, visit the Root Nativity by Fermo Formentini at the St. Maria Annunciata' church. All the figures and the scenes have been made with root-stocks, barks and whatever the woods may offer.
