Situated on the Lake Maggiore between sweet hills and greens plains
coming to the lake, it has its hamlets scattered on the surrounding
slopes Ticinallo, Muceno, Musadino, Domo, Ligurno, Torre and San
Michele, everyone with its own special beauties.
In 1759 has been founded a glass factory that then
would have become the "S.A. National Vetreria A.Lucchini",
a well-known factory specialized in the production of glass plates,
carafes and crystal glasses, only a little inferior to the celebrate
crystals of Boemia.
Along its main street there are many XVII century
beautiful buildings, with portico courts. There is also a little
port and a beautiful lakeside promenade, delimited from a curtain
of old houses, at the shoulders of the Town Hall. All around several
villas with their parks.
To see:
- at Porto, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta,
built around the 1000 and consecrated by San Carlo Borromeo in 1581;
the Church of San Rocco built on the site of a chapel in
memory of the plague of 1470.
- at Domo, the Battistero of San Giovanni,
datable at the Carolingian age, as well as the frescoed Church of
Santo Stefano; the parish Church of Santa Maria with a XVI
century organ coming from the Collegiata of Castiglione Olona.
- at San Michele, the millenary Church of San
Michele a Monte with its X-XI century frescoes..
