Porto Valtravaglia

Porto VT Panorama

Situated on the Lake Maggiore between sweet hills and greens plains coming to the lake, it has its hamlets scattered on the surrounding slopes Ticinallo, Muceno, Musadino, Domo, Ligurno, Torre and San Michele, everyone with its own special beauties.

In 1759 has been founded a glass factory that then would have become the "S.A. National Vetreria A.Lucchini", a well-known factory specialized in the production of glass plates, carafes and crystal glasses, only a little inferior to the celebrate crystals of Boemia.

Along its main street there are many XVII century beautiful buildings, with portico courts. There is also a little port and a beautiful lakeside promenade, delimited from a curtain of old houses, at the shoulders of the Town Hall. All around several villas with their parks.

To see:

- at Porto, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built around the 1000 and consecrated by San Carlo Borromeo in 1581; the Church of San Rocco built on the site of a chapel in memory of the plague of 1470.

- at Domo, the Battistero of San Giovanni, datable at the Carolingian age, as well as the frescoed Church of Santo Stefano; the parish Church of Santa Maria with a XVI century organ coming from the Collegiata of Castiglione Olona.

- at San Michele, the millenary Church of San Michele a Monte with its X-XI century frescoes..
