Located on the Olona Valley, Solbiate Olona is formed by the old town and the hamlet of Solbiello, located to the north but also adjacent to the old road that runs along the top of valley.
Early in 1700, Solbiate was still a small, poor farming village of 400 souls, with subsistence farming based on the cultivation of cereals, mulberry for silkworms, and screw on the exploitation of forests. The river had risen mills for grinding cereals.
Solbiate came into prominence when Andrea Ponti, a cotton farmer from Gallarate, set up a cotton spinning, which in 1823 had 153 workers. By Ponti's family standed in Solbiate the kindergarten, the primary school, the Relief Fund and other philanthropic institutions. In 1906 the company assumed its present name of Cotonificio di Solbiate.
In addition to the ancient houses of the old town you can see some courts remained intact both in Solbiello and in Solbiate. Of particular interest is the nineteenth-century Tobler House, that overlooks the valley with a garden terrace and its staircase to the river.
