These two distinct centers bordering the Lake of Monate have been inhabited since prehistoric times. At Monate was discovered in 1876 a lake-dwelling of the Bronze Age. The Roman presence is testified by a sepulchral inscription in the parish church of Travedona, while Monate were discovered two votive tablets.
Monate preserves some ancient houses around the Romanesque church of S. Maria della Neve (XIII) to which was attached a small monastery.
Travedona is crossed by the Vidona canal (the current stream Acquanegra), whose waters fed different mills at Travedona and Biandronno, as well as the paper mill Stefanini at Ispra. At Faraona place was found a Roman kiln to produce lime from limestone from the nearby hill. The proloco with the project "Vignuvele (Vigna Novella) is promoting the rehabilitation of vine, a task once widely practiced enough to justify the presence of a consortium in Travedona. Other specialties are peaches and products from the dairy 'Burro Lago Monate'.
