The SS 629 road runs along the lombard shore of the
Lake Maggiore, from Sesto Calende to Locarno, in Switzerland.
It is about 60 km long and a travel along it may be
a fine taste of the inland natural beauties.
Throughout all the journey, we can admire splendid
views on the opposite shore: Stresa with the Borromeo Islands,
Cannero with the ruins of the Malpaga castles, Cannobio and
the Swiss Brissago and Ascona.
From Sesto
Calende we set out for Angera and pass under the double
iron bridge that ideally signs the end of the lake and the
prosecution of the Ticino River towards the Po River. We get
over the places of Sant'Anna and Lisanza, and we arrive in
Angera
above which stands the Borromeo Fortress in a flash. Following
the sign road, we turn to the left towards the town centre
and we continue on the road that runs along the promontory
to Ranco.
Continuing on our trip, we take again the SS 629 towards Laveno.
We get over Ispra,
the Lido di Monvalle and arrive in Arolo; following the directions
we leave the main road and visit the Eremo
di Santa Caterina del Sasso.
Left the suggestive sight of the Monastery of Santa Caterina,
we return on the main road and cross Reno di Leggiuno, Cerro
di Laveno, Ceresolo as far as we arrive in Laveno
Mombello.
From Laveno, after few kilometers, we meet Castelveccana,
with the Rocca di Caldè, and then Porto
Valtravaglia and Luino.
Always bordering the shore of the lake, we arrive in Maccagno.
Now, the border is near, at about 10 km. We arrive in Pino
sulla sponda del Lago Maggiore, the Italian municipality
with the longest name, and we can continue in Swiss territory
crossing Zenna towards the Magadino Plain and Locarno.
