Lake Ghirla
|
|
It has a surface of 0.28 sq. km and a depth of 14 mt. Its tributary
is the Margorabbia Brook that floods in a marshy area before flowing
in the lake. This area from Ganna to Lake Ghirla is a wetland covered
by sedge fields, willows and black alders. Mallard, black grebe
and green woodpecker nest here.
In 1898, the level of the lake was raised artificially with a dam
to collect the water and send it to a hydroelectric power station
for the production of electric power for the railroad of the Valganna.
In early 1900s Lake Ghirla was a famous resort: in winter you could
skate on its frozen water and in all the other seasons boat and
swimming-race went on.
On the northern side of the lake there is the only town, Ghirla.
On the opposite side of the road that borders the lake it has been
prepared a large equipped municipal park with camping, restaurant
and riding-ground .
