It has a surface of 2.5 kmq and a maximum depth of 34 mt. Formed
in the last glacial age like all the other lakes in the Varese district
is encircled from morainic hills and fed from native sources.
As the shores of the Lake Monate are private for the greater part,
this little lake is one of the few glacial basins where bathing
is permitted.
In 1864, two large pile-dwelling settlements have been found in
Cadrezzate and one other in Monate. Among the finds there are flint
tools, ceramics, faced stone axes, weaving frame and three monoxylous
pirogues dated 2500 B.C.
On the surroundings, there are the town of Travedona-Monate,
Cadrezzate and Osmate.
