Campo dei Fiori

Campo dei Fiori is the first great Prealpine range encountered by those heading North from the Po Valley. It extends between the Lake Varese and the Valcuvia Valley and probably owns its name to the impressive number of daffodils that once ornamented the summit meadows. In a clear day from Campo dei Fiori we can see the Dome of Milan and the Malpensa Airport, as well as the mountains belonging to the Alps' chain, such as the Monviso, Jungfrau and Ortles' group. The Monte Rosa group is always on the horizon, at westwards.

In 1984 has been established the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park who includes the Martica - Chiusarella massif. Belong to the Park the Natural Reserve of Lake Ganna, Lake Brinzio, Pau Majur and Carecc peat-bogs also.

Due to the prevalence and stratification of calcareous and argillaceous rocks, the Campo dei Fiori massif is rich of numerous caves, not all of which have been explored. The most famous one is the Remeron Cave that was first explored in 1830s and contains two picturesque pools at a depth of over 200 mt., and a statue of the Virgin Mary venerates by the local speleologists.

On the summit of Campo dei Fiori, Peak Paradise (1226 mt.), rises The Centre of Natural Sciences "G.V. Schiaparelli", that includes the Astronomic Observatory, the Prealpine Geophyscal and Seismological Center, and the Zambeletti Botanical Centre as well as the Tomaselli Botanical Garden.

The Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori, a fine example of the Art Nouveau style by the architect G. Sommaruga, stands on the slope beneath the first peak of Campo dei Fiori.

The town of Luvinate, Barasso, Comerio, Cocquio Trevisago, Orino, Castello Cabiaglio, Bedero Valcuvia, Valganna surround the Park, while. Brinzio is the only one inside it.
