It is the natural continuation of the Valganna Valley towards
the Lake Lugano and is encircled by Mount Castelvecchio (617
mt.), Mount La Nave (990 mt.), Mount Mezzano (932 mt.), Mount
Sette Termini (972 mt.), on the left, and Mount Marzio (875
mt.) on the right. This small morainic valley is a green hilly
plateau stretching towards the Lake Lugano and in the first
1900's was a famous holiday resort so that many villas have
been made.
Many finds datable from the Iron Age to the Romans Time have
been discovered to testimony that an important route of communication
towards the North Europe went through this valley.
Until the Middle Ages, the main entrance to the valley was
near Cunardo, at Raglio, where the way coming from Valganna,
Valcuvia and Valtravaglia Valley met. The way continued to
Taverne, climbed up to Cugliate to avoid the Baraggia marsh,
reached Marchirolo, Cadegliano, Pontecchio and finally the
Ponte Tresa bridge towars the alpine passes.
In the Marchirolo Valley there are the towns: Cunardo,
Cugliate Fabiasco,
Marchirolo, Marzio,
Cadegliano Viconago,
Lavena Ponte Tresa.
