The Valceresio Valley extends for approximately 8 km. from
Induno Olona to Porto Ceresio, on the Lake Lugano.
At first narrow then gradually more and more open, it is
always the way of faster connection to the Canton Ticino.
Modeled in the course of time by the ancient glaciers, it
is encircled by the Mount Minisfredo (1012 mt), the Poncione
di Ganna (993 mt), the Mount Piambello (1129 mt), the Mount
S. Elia (665 mt), the Mount Orsa (993 mt) and the Mount Pravanello
(1045 mt).
The Valceresio Valley is the extension into Italian territory
of the fossiliferous strata of the Swiss Monte San Giorgio,
Unesco's World Heritage. The fossil specimens housed in the
Museo dei Fossili in Besano and in the Museum of Natural History
in Induno Olona testify the geologic evolution of the Valceresio
and the presence of the dinosaurs in the territory.
In 1993 near Besano, has been found the largest and most
complete marine reptile ever found in Italy, and one of the
world's best preserved ichthyosaur from the Triassic period
(about 235 million year ago). The Besanosaurus leptorhynchus
lived in the calm and shallow waters of Besano lagoon, bordering
the Tethys Ocean, an ancient tropical sea.
In 1996, in a limestone block in a quarry in Saltrio, near
the Swiss border, bones belonging to a large, new predatory
theropod dinosaur have been found in Early Jurassic sediments. In
honor of its place of discovery, the dinosaur has tentatively
been named Saltriosaur.
The municipalities of Arcisate,
Besano, Bisuschio,
Brusimpiano, Clivio,
Cuasso
al Monte, Induno Olona,
Porto Ceresio, Saltrio,
Viggiù are in the
Valceresio Valley.
