It is enclosed between the Martica-Chiusarella massif to the
left and the Mount Monarco (858 mt), the Mount Minisfreddo
(1042 mt), the Poncione di Ganna (993 mt) and the Mount Piambello
(1129 mt) to the right.
In the bottom of the valley, the Comunelle plain, runs the
Margorabbia Brook, that is tributary and emissary of the
two little lakes of Ganna and Ghirla before to flow into the
Lake Maggiore. The thick woods of alders, willows, ashes and
birch-trees give to all the valley and particularly to the
Lake Ganna an intense green colour. After the village of Ghirla
the valley opens and changes in an hollow of hills, the Marchirolo
Valley.
The valley was an important route of transit between the
Olona Valley and the Lake Lugano and the North Europe.
In XII century, the Benedictine monks built up the Abbey
of St. Gemolo and start to reclaim the land around the
Lake Ganna.
At the end (or the beginning) of the valley, near Induno
Olona, there is the lovely place of the Grotte di Valganna,
gorges of karstic origin in which have been recovered
many fossil specimens of mammals. In the cold season, it always
impressive to see the waterfall iced.
A little ahead, there is the Splugen - Poretti brewery,
a famous examples of industrial Art Nouveau, by the architects
Alfred and Richard Bihl.
The only municipality of the Valley is the town of Valganna,
with the hamlet of Boarezzo,
Ganna, Ghirla,
Mondonico.
