The Veddasca Valley is the most northern of the Varese Province
and is still today the most solitary and wild, with remarkable
evidences of the prealpine rural culture.
The Giona Brook, that flows from the Mount Tamaro
into Lake Maggiore, lines it entirely. There aren't communication
routes between the two slopes.
On the right of the Giona Brook, along the winding road
that links Maccagno to the Indemini Swiss border, there are
the villages of Veddo, Garabiolo, Cadero, Graglio, Armio,
Lozzo, Biegno. Veddo, from which the valley is called, and
Garabiolo are hamlet of the Maccagno municipality, while Cadero,
Graglio, Armio (town hall), Lozzo e Biegno
belong to Comune di Veddasca.
The other slope of the valley is even more deserted and the
only inhabited town is Curiglia con Monteviasco, that
is reachable by car from Dumenza. Until 1985
Monteviasco was reachable only by a 2000 steps path
as it was the unique village of the Varese Province without
road connection with other places. Today a 5 minutes cable
railway links it to Piero.
The
Forcora Pass (1179 mt.) is the starting point
for many excursion on the sorrounding mountains.
